Betulaceae / Corylus avellana – Hazel

Hazelnuts! I love them, squirrels love them, what’s not to like?

This tree from the birch family grows as a small multi-stem tree to up to 6 meters, and exceptionally 12 meters tall. Historically and presently, hazels are often coppiced, which means to cut the tree to the ground. The tree quickly regrows with many more stems, and because of the well established root system, this new growth is much more vigorous. This process is repeated several years, and the wood is used for fencing and weaving. It also keeps the tree compact and keeps the nuts within picking reach. Awesome.
